JROTC Outreach Programs
The National Science Center is in partnership with the Army's Cadet Command to provide hands-on math and science training for high school cadets. The National Science Center provides curriculum and materials for 8 hours of activities (4 hours of science and 4 hours of math). Cadets construct and test battery-powered cars, spinning coil motors, series and parallel circuits, flashlights, burglar alarms, telegraph keys, electromagnets and engraving pencils. Math activities consist of problem solving, role-playing, and modeling.
The National Science Center conducts Train-the-Trainer workshops annually at three locations across the country, with two additional sessions being held at Fort Discovery in Augusta, Georgia. Approximately 75 Army, Air Force, and civilian instructors attend the training each year. Cadet Command requires that all high school JROTC programs participate in the National Science Center's Summer Camp or In-School Math and Science Programs.
Summer Camp ProgramThe National Science Center's Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) Summer Camp program continues to be one of the National Science Center's most successful outreach efforts. Sixty camps were conducted in 2004 with over 20,000 cadets from 48 states, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands, American Soma, and Camp Zama, Japan, participating in the program. Air Force JROTC schools continue to participate in the camp program.
In-School Math and Science ProgramThe In-School Math and Science Program (ISMSP) continues to expand. During the 2004-2005 academic school year, the ISMSP supported 212 schools with over 30,000 cadets participating in the program. The ISMSP was established to provide the NSC's math and science activities to high school JROTC programs and cadets who were unable to attend summer camps. Due to the limited space for classroom activities at military forts and camps, many of the JROTC schools have switched the math and science activities from camps to in-school classrooms.
